Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have expressed their commitment to find a fair, reasonable and acceptable solution to the India-China border dispute. Both the leaders emphasized that differences between the two countries should not turn into disputes and relations (India China relations) should be taken forward from a strategic and long-term perspective.
Prime Minister Modi and Xi Jinping held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi on Saturday. The two leaders welcomed the progress made in India-China relations since their last meeting in Tianjin in August 2025.
Said peace on the border necessary for relations
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi said that both the countries should look at their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. He clarified that differences between the two countries should not take the form of disputes.
Modi stressed on making mutual respect, sensitivity and common interests the basis for India-China relations. He said that peace and stability in the border areas is very important for the continued development of relations between the two countries.
The Prime Minister also expressed the need to follow the existing agreements and mutual consents related to the border.
Consensus reached on resolution of border dispute
The Ministry of External Affairs said that both the leaders reiterated their commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the border question. Along with this, it was said to keep in mind the extensive bilateral relations between the two countries and the long-term interests of the people of both the countries.
Xi Jinping also expressed the need to look at India-China relations from a strategic perspective. He said that despite the differences between the two countries, they can move forward towards common development by supporting and cooperating with each other.
Emphasis on increasing contact between business and people
India-China economic and trade relations were also discussed in the meeting. Both sides stressed the need to address issues such as trade imbalance, supply chain and better and reliable market access.
Along with increasing people-to-people contacts, the two leaders also discussed cultural exchange, business relations and making travel easier between the two countries.
West Asia crisis also discussed
During the BRICS meeting, the issue of ongoing tension in West Asia also came to the fore. In the New Delhi declaration, BRICS countries expressed concern over the increasing tension in the region and appealed to exercise maximum restraint and avoid such steps, which could worsen the situation.
Xi Jinping expressed concern about the ongoing war in West Asia. He expressed the need to move towards a political solution and a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire. China, along with BRICS countries, talked about playing a role in peace and stability in the Middle East.
China will host BRICS next year
Xi Jinping announced that China will chair BRICS next year and will host the 19th BRICS Summit. He said that China will work together with all countries to build consensus and take BRICS cooperation to new heights.
At the same time, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to Xi Jinping for the cooperation and support received from China during India’s BRICS chairmanship.
India is currently hosting the 18th BRICS Summit. The theme of this conference being organized in New Delhi on 12th and 13th September is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
