Aichi-Nagoya, September 23 (Hindustan Reporter) Olympic medalist and three-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Mirabai Chanu won her first medal at the Asian Games on Wednesday. She won a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games,
Chanu lifted a total weight of 198 kg in the competition. In the snatch category, he successfully completed all his three attempts and lifted 83, 85 and 87 kg respectively.
In clean and jerk, Chanu started with a successful effort of 107 kg. After this he successfully lifted 111 kg in his second attempt. In this way his total score was 198 kg.
Ri Song Gum of North Korea won the gold medal with a total weight of 215 kg. Mirabai Chanu got the silver medal with 198 kg, while Vijayana won the bronze medal.
This medal is special for Chanu. At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, she had to abandon her final clean and jerk attempt due to injury and finished fourth. This time he achieved his first medal in the Asian Games by making it to the podium.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medalist Chanu had won a gold medal in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games. With a silver at the Asian Games, she has added another major achievement to her illustrious international career.
Mirabai Chanu has become the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win medals in all the major international weightlifting competitions—Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Asian Championships and Commonwealth Championships.
